Amazon Appstore’s Discontinuation on Android Devices
Amazon has announced that it will discontinue support for its Appstore on Android devices effective August 20, 2025. This decision marks the end of a 14-year run for the platform, which served as a third-party alternative to the Google Play Store, offering over 500,000 apps at its peak. Post-August 20, users will no longer have access to the Amazon Appstore on Android devices, and while previously downloaded apps might continue to function, their operation without updates is not guaranteed.
Impact on Amazon Coins Program
In conjunction with the Appstore’s discontinuation, Amazon is also phasing out its virtual currency, Amazon Coins. As of February 20, 2025, customers can no longer purchase new Amazon Coins. Existing coin balances remain usable until the August cutoff date. After this period, any unused coins will be eligible for refunds, with Amazon promising to provide detailed information on the refund process in due course.
Continued Support for Amazon Devices
It’s important to note that this change affects only third-party Android devices. The Amazon Appstore will continue to be available and supported on Amazon’s own hardware, including Fire Tablets and Fire TVs. Users of these devices will retain access to the Appstore and their purchased content without interruption.
Developer Guidelines and App Availability
For developers, Amazon has outlined the following timeline:
• February 20, 2025: Submission of new apps targeting Android devices is no longer accepted.
• August 20, 2025: Final date to submit updates for existing apps on the Amazon Appstore for Android devices.
After August 20, apps downloaded from the Amazon Appstore on Android devices are not guaranteed to operate correctly, especially without updates. Developers are encouraged to inform their user base and consider transitioning their apps to other platforms to maintain accessibility.
Strategic Implications and Market Context
This strategic shift comes in the wake of significant changes in the mobile app distribution landscape. Notably, a recent court ruling mandates that Google must open its Play Store to third-party app stores, aiming to foster competition in the Android app market. This evolving environment may have influenced Amazon’s decision to reevaluate its position within the Android ecosystem.
