Are you excited to ride a Dragon in Crimson Desert? This massive beast known as the Blackstar streaks across the heavens, while scorching your foes to a crisp. It’s a terrifying creature to behold, so you can thank you lucky stars that it’s on your side. Our guide has all the details on how you can unlock it. Just be ready for spoilers related to campaign progression.

Meeting the Blackstar Dragon in Chapter 9

You first encounter the Crimson Desert Dragon, the Blackstar, during Chapter 9’s Shattered Stars quest chain. In it, you’ll travel to the palace of Urdavah in the titular region. That’s where you’ll pull out a spear that has wounded the Blackstar as part of a cutscene. Shortly thereafter, you need to head back to Urdavah to actually ride the creature itself.

Note: For the next part, you need to have your Stamina at level 5 or higher. Otherwise, it would be impossible to complete the objective.

Riding and cleansing the Blackstar Dragon in Chapter 9

When you get close enough to Urdavah, you should see a “Wait” option when you press the pause button. This automatically spawns you on the battlements with the Dragon fast approaching. Here’s what you need to do:

  • When the Dragon is close enough, jump and glide. As it passes below you, activate your Axiom Force–i.e. grapple–and target its back.
  • Immediately when you latch onto it, press the jump button to perform an Aerial Maneuver. This costs 200 points of Stamina, which is why it’s imperative that you level up the attribute.
  • While you’re on the Blackstar’s back, press and hold the button prompt to “Resist”–i.e. tighten your grip–whenever it dives and rolls.
  • Eventually, you’ll be prompted to perform a Focused Force Palm. Activate Focus, then press and hold the button for Force Palm until it charges. When you see a bright glow on its back, target it and release the button.

The Blackstar will be purified of the corruption. It will fly away, though we can guess that it’s thankful for the help.

Facing the Golden Star boss in Chapter 11

Let’s fast forward to Chapter 11’s Foreboding Shadow quest chain. This takes you to Delesyia, where you’ll eventually face a Mecha Dragon known as Golden Star. This boss has several devastating abilities, including a flame tornado and bombard barrage. You can deal a lot of damage, though, by throwing spears whenever it’s immobile.

Once you’ve depleted the boss’ health, Blackstar will swoop in to aid you. Then, when you return to the Nest of Valor location (which you previously visited in Chapter 9), Blackstar will become your permanent Dragon mount in Crimson Desert.

Blackstar Dragon summon, controls, and cooldown

You’ll actually ride on Blackstar a few times as part of the main story. Likewise, you’ll be able to summon it while exploring Pywel but not in the Abyss realm. Here are some additional tidbits:

  • The Dragon can shoot fireballs in succession. It also has a lock-on function that lets it shoot multiple fireballs. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to work at times.
  • Its fire breath burns targets at close range.
  • It can do a quick mid-air roll if you press the dodge button twice.
  • While it’s quite powerful and it can easily clear outposts and bandit camps, it has an extremely long cooldown–i.e. approximately one hour in real-time.

That does it for our guide on how to get the Blackstar Dragon mount in Crimson Desert. This majestic beasts isn’t the only mode of transport in the game. If you’re interested about other options, you can take a look at our mounts and vehicles guide.

The lands of Pywel are vast and you are the only one who can keep the peace. As you explore distant realms and battle numerous foes, you might want to read about various tips in our Crimson Desert guides hub.
