The latest system software update for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 included more than stability, adding a feature that should be standard on all gaming platforms. Users can now add notes about their friends on their ever-growing friends list across both platforms.

As Nintendo’s patch notes for Version 22.0.0 read, the Switch firmware update added “the ability to save notes about friends on your Friend List.” Friends won’t see the notes you write about them, and you can even see and edit your friends’ notes on the Nintendo Switch smartphone app. With notes, users can write a reminder of who a friend is, what their name is, or how they met them.

It’s a huge help for Switch owners with unwieldy friend lists, especially if they’ve been building up since the original Switch launched in 2017. The feature is arguably nine years too late, as your list might already include an overabundance of nicknames and aliases that you no longer recognize, or random people you friended after online gaming sessions, only to be forgotten soon after. Still, it’s an opportunity to clean your list, label the people you know, and make sense of it all.
