Well, well, well, lookie here. You’re probably curious about all the endings in Resident Evil Requiem, aren’t you? Leon and Grace’s arduous trek has been fraught with danger and, finally, that journey comes to a climactic conclusion. Naturally, this guide has all the details that you want and all the holy moly spoilers to boot.

Note: For everything else about the newest entry in Capcom’s long-running survival horror series, you can head over to our Resident Evil Requiem guides hub.

What does the creator desire?

There are several points of no return in the campaign. The last one occurs as Leon is waiting for the elevator in the ARK facility’s Bioweapon Repository/B4 Staff Room. After that segment, you regain control of Grace, who has to go to the central chamber in the ARK.

In the central chamber, a question will be presented to you: What does the creator desire?

  • Destroy Elpis
  • Release Elpis

Upon picking an option, you’re asked if you’re 100% certain of your decision. So, let’s see just what would happen in these Resident Evil Requiem endings, eh?

Destruction ending: What happens if you destroy Elpis?

Choosing to destroy Elpis is actually the bad ending in Resident Evil Requiem:

  • Leon tries to fight “Wesker wannabe” Zeno, only to get overpowered, as Zeno continues to dodge bullets.
  • Leon, already succumbing to the effects of the Raccoon City Syndrome virus, remains helpless.
  • Grace then looks on in shock as Zeno shoots Leon in the head, killing him instantly.
  • Grace manages to escape as the ARK facility collapses. However, she’s distraught by the turn of events.

Note: Since this is the bad ending, be on the lookout for a prompt once you’re back in the main menu after the end credits. You’ll be asked if you want to reload a system-generated autosave at the moment when Grace has to make a decision about Elpis. This is a do-over so you can still see a different outcome.

Hope ending: What happens if you release Elpis?

Choosing to release Elpis in Resident Evil Requiem leads to the good ending.

  • As you progress through the campaign, you learn that Elpis is an antivirus, a cure to all the ills brought about by Umbrella and other corporations that manufacture bioweapons.
  • Grace administers the cure to Leon, who then regains his strength.
  • Zeno is incensed by your decision. Victor Gideon then arrives, stating that this cure will continue to wreak havoc.
  • Victor then sprouts tentacle arms. He calls Zeno a cheap imitation, before slicing off his head.
  • This leads to a final boss battle: Leon vs. Victor.

Hope ending: The Victor/Nemesis boss battle

We’ve got more details for you in our Resident Evil Requiem boss guide. That said, Victor does turn into a Nemesis variant:

  • His tentacle arms during the first phase of the bout are similar to the ones seen in Nemesis’ humanoid/Tyrant form.
  • In the second phase, Victor turns into a monstrosity akin to Nemesis’ final form. Yep, the battle even includes the “shoot the glowing pustules” mechanic from Resident Evil 3.
  • Leon finishes off Victor by blasting its core with the Requiem, causing the creature to dissipate into a gooey mess.

Hope ending: Cutscenes and conclusions

After the fight, you get to watch more cutscenes:

  • Leon stays with Grace as the ARK facility slowly shuts down. Despairing that they won’t be able to escape, they’re suddenly surprised by the arrival of BSAA agents of the Wolf Hound Squad. Leon is then told that Commander Redfield is looking for him.
  • Grace has a cup of coffee while sitting in a helicopter. She and Leon have a short chat.
  • Sherry Birkin, who also seems to be infected by Raccoon City Syndrome, smiles. It’s not just because Leon survived. It’s the fact that Elpis can be used as a cure.
  • News reports mention that a bioweapons lab–i.e. ARK–has been discovered deep below Raccoon City. It’s noted that the US president denies involvement, but we all know the truth based on documents in terminals and other files.

Hope ending: Grace and Emily

A cutscene shows that a young girl has been “rescued from a bio-terror front in Rhodes Hill.” We then see Emily, who’s unconscious but alive, as the cocoon that encased her in her monster form slowly unravels.

Later, after the end credits, we see that Grace is happy at her job back in the FBI. There are two photos on her desk: One with her mom, and another with Emily. It looks like she’s now Emily’s guardian.

Note 1: The Hope ending in Resident Evil Requiem fully fleshes out the story. It also unlocks Grace’s Report, which you can access in the Bonus Content menu. This is a summary of key events in the series, with a few retcons given what had transpired in Requiem.

Note 2: We’ve also learned that, if you choose to “release Elpis,” you might not receive a prompt to reload an earlier autosave. If you want to see the “destroy Elpis” ending, you should (a) keep a backup save before Leon rides the elevator or (b) avoid overwriting the autosave when Grace has to make a decision in the central chamber.

Zeno and The Connections

After Grace’s scene in the FBI office, we see another segment where mercenaries arrive at the depths of the Crater/ARK. One radios in and says that all the BSAA operatives have been eliminated. This individual also states that they’ve acquired their target. It’s not certain as to what this might be. Perhaps it’s a fragment of Victor/Nemesis or Zeno’s magical shades?

Speaking of Zeno, this fella does resemble Wesker uncannily, right down to his bullet-dodging skills. Victor also considers him just a cheap imitation of the original.

What we do know is that Zeno has been hand-picked by The Connections, a mysterious criminal organization first revealed in Resident Evil 7. The group has orchestrated key events, often behind the scenes. Some of these are mentioned in previous games in the series, and a select few tidbits are noted by Grace in her report:

  • Initially, it’s assumed that Brandon Bailey, the protege of Umbrella co-founder James Marcus, founded The Connections. However, he might just be a “cog in the wheel.”
  • The Connections has had deep roots in the criminal underworld since before the 1980s.
  • The thermobaric missile strike in Raccoon City wasn’t meant to contain the spread of the outbreak. Rather, it was meant to disrupt the relationship between the US government and Umbrella, which would then shift the blame for the corporation’s illegal activities onto Oswell Spencer.
  • In short, The Connections was the group that lobbied for the missile strike. This chain of events allowed the organization to seize Umbrella’s assets, including the ARK facility.
  • In Resident Evil 6, then-president Adam Benford was said to have known of the ties between the government and Umbrella. In Grace’s report in Requiem, she surmises that Benford knew about The Connections’ involvement. Zeno also remarks that Benford had to be assassinated to get him out of the way.

Oswell Spencer: Redemption, Retcon, and Grace’s origins

Grace’s report also admits that Oswell Spencer, the Umbrella co-founder who engineered the company’s illicit activities into viral research, eugenics, and various experiments, shares the blame for numerous atrocities that have happened throughout the years. Veteran players will also remember how Albert Wesker killed Spencer back in Resident Evil 5, after the latter’s speech: “I was to become a god, creating a new world with an advanced race of human beings.”

That said, events in Resident Evil Requiem show Spencer in an entirely new light:

  • We now know that The Connections and the US government orchestrated his downfall, making him a scapegoat for all the devastation caused by Umbrella.
  • Wesker presented evidence against Spencer during his trial.
  • Wesker was linked to Tricell, which had strong ties to The Connections. Grace surmises that it’s highly likely that there was pressure from the government and The Connections during Spencer’s trial.

It seems that Spencer also actively sought redemption during his final years:

  • We know that Spencer/Umbrella conducted experiments on children in the Orphanage.
  • However, we also know that Alyssa Ashcroft had interviewed Spencer when the latter was already infirm. It was during this moment that Spencer entrusted a baby–Grace–to Alyssa Ashcroft.
  • Grace was just a normal baby, completely unaltered by Spencer or any of his experiments. She was a foundling and was considered by Spencer to be his “hope.” (Elpis is the Greek word for “hope,” after all.)
  • Spencer developed Elpis as a powerful antigen that can render viral weapons inert.

Perhaps Spencer truly wanted to do some good toward the end of his life? Then again, perhaps Elpis is meant to create more chaos among corporations that develop bioweapons and the governments that utilize them? Elpis might be Spencer’s way of enacting vengeance from beyond the grave, given that upstart companies, rival organizations, and political forces plotted his downfall.
