DeepSeek’s Chatbot Underperforms in Accuracy Audit

In a recent evaluation by NewsGuard, Chinese AI startup DeepSeek‘s chatbot achieved a mere 17% accuracy in delivering news and information, ranking tenth out of eleven AI chatbots assessed. This performance places it significantly behind Western counterparts such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

High Failure Rate and Propensity for Misinformation

The audit revealed that DeepSeek’s chatbot failed to provide accurate information 83% of the time. Specifically, it repeated false claims in 30% of responses and offered vague or unhelpful answers in 53% of cases. This failure rate is notably higher than the 62% average observed among its Western competitors, raising concerns about the chatbot’s reliability.

Unprompted Promotion of Chinese Government Narratives

Beyond accuracy issues, the audit highlighted that DeepSeek’s chatbot frequently inserted Chinese government messaging into responses, even when unrelated to the queries posed. This tendency underscores potential biases and the influence of state narratives within the AI’s outputs.

Implications for Users and the AI Industry

Despite its rapid ascent to the top of the App Store charts, DeepSeek’s chatbot’s performance in delivering accurate and unbiased information is concerning. The findings from NewsGuard’s audit suggest that users should exercise caution when relying on this AI for news and information, as it may propagate misinformation and exhibit inherent biases.
