How much of a difference does 13 years make when it comes to video game graphics? Quite a lot, if the game in question is Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Out this week–alongside plenty of other great games this month–the Black Flag remake’s most obvious upgrade is in its visuals, which have been fine-tuned to take advantage of modern technologies.

Ray-traced global illumination, dynamic weather systems, overhauled character models, and continuous geometry refinement all sound fancy on paper, but how does the game look when seen on a big screen? Pretty darn great, especially when you compare it to the 2014 original. Fortunately, you won’t have to set up an old PlayStation next to your PS5, as GameSpot’s video team has put together a comparison video to show you just how wide the gap is, visually, between the two Black Flag games.

For console owners, it looks like the PS5 Pro will offer the best visual experience. Sony and Ubisoft recently outlined how Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will run on PS5 Pro, with the target resolution being an upscaled 2160p in all three graphical modes. Frame rates range between 30 and 60 fps, depending on which mode you use, while all three of these options feature extended ray tracing. Not just a visual upgrade, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced also features numerous improvements and quality-of-life updates–as well as a few new problems to contend with.

If you’re looking to set sail on the reimagined Jackdaw, then you won’t have long to wait as Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced launches on July 9. Global launch times for the game have been confirmed by Ubisoft, with most regions having different times for when Black Flag Resynced is unlocked on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. To get you in the mood, you can also boot up a playlist of sea shanties from the game.
