Zelda: Ocarina Of Time’s Remake Brings Back The Funniest Joke Nintendo Ever Told

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is one of my favorite Zelda stories–the type of story that truly feels like it encapsulates the “legend” name. It’s full of broad moments of heroism and lore that feel as if they could be the stuff of an oral history of Hyrule. It is also, weirdly, very funny. The contrast between Link’s heroic journey and the goofball sense of humor in so many of the NPC interactions is one reason it stood out so much. And I’m glad to say Nintendo kept that half of it intact as well, especially in the case of your first interaction with the Zora monarch.

King Zora, the ruler of the Zora kingdom, exists mostly to fret about his mischievous daughter and to be a roadblock–very literally–to one of the early dungeons. When he grants you access the massive fish king scooches out of your way at comically slow speed. It has become something of a meme in the Zelda community, with most agreeing that it’s a pretty decent bit of physical comedy. If there were ever any doubt it was intended as a punchline, though, those can be put to rest with the Ocarina remake.

Yes, King Zora in the year two thousand and twenty six still scooches as slow as ever. Maybe slower! This is not a limitation of the system or the animations, as Nintendo could certainly have found an excuse to roll him out of the way faster these days. No, he’s just slow as hell, and it’s hilarious. Link is on a fated adventure to save the world, King Zora’s own daughter is potentially in danger, and he still moves like your uncle making room on the sofa after Thanksgiving dinner. It’s beautiful.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a superb remake altogether, capturing what made the original special–including its silly humor–alongside all the grandeur that you’ve come to expect.
